Europe and Aquaculture

In 2005, Europe’s aquaculture industry represented:

  • a total of 2 140 000 tonnes (4.4% of the world aquacultural animal production)
  • a value of 6.26 billion $ (8.8% of the total world value of aquacultural produce)

France, at 222 000 tonnes, is Europe’s second largest producer, behind Norway (world number one salmon producer) and in front of Spain. While Norwegian production continues to increase regularly, French production remains stable. In 2005, Spanish production - which is mostly from mussel farming - decreased by 25%.
