Aquacultural production totals per continent

Aquacultural animal production on each continent in 2005

In quantity

The vast majority of aquaculture is done in Asia. Africa and Australasia, in contrast, are two continents where it is relatively little developed for the moment. Despite low production, African aquaculture is growing strongly (mainly due to Egyptian aquaculture). The evolution of South American production is linked with the development of shrimp aquaculture.

Compared with 2004 production, Asia and Australasia showed mean progressions of 5.5 and 8.5% in 2005, respectively, Africa increased by more than 15% and South America by more than 25%. In contrast, Europe regressed by 2.5% and North America by 11%.

In value

The increase in the proportion of aquaculture in South America can be explained by export aquaculture (mainly shrimps).

Aquacultural production by environment type and continent in 2005

Asia and North America have inland aquaculture, while Europe, South America and Australasia have more marked proportions of marine aquaculture. Africa shows yet a different profile, with more brackish water aquaculture.
